Spartans Never Die by SoupyAssassin Spartans Never Die by SoupyAssassin
"Die? Didn't you know? Spartans never die."

So with Halo: Reach right around the corner, I wanted to do a piece that shows the side of Spartans that most people don't get to see. They are trained killers, yes, but they are human beings aswell. They feel pain. They feel regret. They are just as mortal as any person. But what separates a Spartan from the average person is the lack of respite the Spartans have. All they know is war. All they have is war. And when a brother or sister in arms falls, I believe they feel it more than they let on too. Because they have nothing left but the ghosts of their comrades to keep them company.

good point another thing that I think they feel is that they're pretty much invincible so it must hit pretty hard when one of them dies, I mean that ida must be shaken a lot. :iconclapplz::iconepicclapplz::icondwcar1plz::icondwcar2plz::icondwcar3plz:

I'm not sure they think they're invincible.  I mean, they grew up with the fear of death pretty much constantly on them.  More than half of the SII's died in the augementation process.  And even more died on the events leading up the Fall of Reach.

They're not unaccustomed to seeing their buddies die, but at the same time, they're forced to hold themselves above grieving and mourning for the sake of the mission and their fellow soldiers.

While, they're certainly less "mortal" than their average marine, I'm pretty sure they don't think themselves invincible.

eh I guess but you've got to admit being like that human tank that everyone has seen master chief be there must be a certain idea that nearly nothing can touch you. Or at least in the very early stages of the war.

In the early stages, probably.  I mean, they probably thought that they'd seen the hardest shit.  Becoming a spartan probably seemed impossible.  They'd definitely FEEL strong.  Maybe some level of confidence that they're tough and can probably handle most situations.  And they've got a team of guys at their back that have been through just as much of a struggle.

Invincible, I don't think so.  Strong, I sure hope so.

So many emotions, and without any obvious nonverbal signs as well. Great piece!

BTW: Is that chief with Sam's helmet?

Thanks! Spartans are usually characters of few words, so I thought it was fitting.

And not really. The inspiration was definitely derived from that. As Sam was the first Spartan casualty, many deaths are compared to his original loss. But alas, this could not possibly be Sam's helmet as it is incinerated in the nuclear bomb detonation he died to ensure.

I see. Have to say that's pretty deep. Maybe you could get inspiration for a piece about Kurt?

I could, yeah. In fact, I've tried many times. I'm a big fan of Ghosts of Onyx. I've tried COUNTLESS times to get Kurt and the SIIIs right, but I never could.

Maybe some day I'll find the right inspiration.

I read that book several times and tried to finish it, but classes kept on getting in the way so I kept on losing track of where I was.

I know the beginning part, though. Can't forget that prologue.

Spartan-IIs were due to their publicity not allowed to be listed KIA, but Spartan-IIIs well next to no one knows where they went. What lives or worlds were saved because of them as usually their misisons left no survivors.

Exceptions include any separated from company for front line teams or somehow they survived. Of course I don't know in what context you could say they survived. Physically yes, but otherwise the rest takes time.

Halo: Reach also poses another inconsistency as Halsey seems unaware of the Spartan-III project until somewhere between First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx. Then again maybe there's something I missed or forgot about Fall of Reach. Either way, she knows all 75 Spartan-IIs by first name.

The Spartan-IIIs aren't hers.

Anyway another spectacular Halo art here.

Spartan IIIs were never really supposed to exist anyways. Highly classified ONI stuff. I mean, Halsey DID know about them, which she should have (being a genius after all), but when they died, they died. It's almost as if they were list KIA first, then relisted as alive later with how they survive and fight. Or rather, just die.

I mean, some SURVIVED. Some made it back. Very few though. Those that made it back, were they really alive? I think Lucy's question at Pegasi Delta was an apt one. The people they'd been living with and fighting with and growing with all died on a single day. Who's to say they didn't die with them?

I think she DID know about the SIIIs. I just think they're like her annoying nieces and nephews, ya know? The sister project to her SIIs and the children born from it. They weren't her SPARTANS. They were good, but they weren't hers.

Yes Beta Company was their surrogate family. The IIIs usually came from worlds devastated by the Covenant. I think they did die that day, but Lucy having Tom and vice versa gave them something to fight for. Someone to live for.

Well of course, I think Deja found out about what Ackerson was up to.

One of the funniest things I heard Halsey say in the game was "Are you a puppet or a Spartan?" to Carter. Classically Carter turns the table on her later in the same conversation. I swear Kat was grinning or it felt like ah he got ya there.

Yes... she understood what Kurt was dealing with... but he had to send more into the field than she ever did. He had to live with himself when so many of them died regardless of what he did for them. He did things to them that could be perceived in many different ways, but they were chosen, he had to make them ready as possible. Or at least give them a fighting chance out there.

Ahhhh... well first you must obtain the Activation Index and then head into the control and...

No but seriously, you can get it any bookstore that sells Halo books. I'd say Barnes and Noble definitely has it.

Its got a good amount of information, but there are some glaring errors in the book. It is written by 343 Industries after all. Not Bungie.

Well, see, I DON'T know how they got out, when they got out, or why they got out.

All I know is that Halsey was in the Micro Dyson sphere, right? And this was before the Human-Covenant War ended, right?

If all that's true, then how did she do his Eulogy at the end of Halo: Reach? She'd still be in the bubble. And the Euglogy takes place on a re-terraformed Reach 30 years after the war ended.

SOMEHOW she must have gotten out for her to be there.

That's all I was able to figure out. Its interesting though.

I don't have any of the figures, and I've only read one of the comics. But my knowledge of the majority of the story is very good.

My favorite part of the story is related to the Spartan IIIs.

Spartans never die. They just respawn.

xD Sorry, sorry. I had to say that.

But in all seriousness, this is a very nice piece, the lighting captures the mood of the picture very well, and the armor detail is amazing. My hand muscles usually hurt after I draw Spartan armor, and I can never get it even close to being correct. ;3;

Hahaha! I've never heard someone say that before! Very clever.

And thanks, it took me a while to do, from sketching to lining to vectoring to coloring to shading and all that. Not to mention all the references I had to use.

Especially the Pelican Bay. Not fun to do. But I liked the whole process overall.

Thanks again!

OH thank you! Yeah, I'm a huge Halo nerd. But the one thing I don't know well is the Covenant. I know they're history and motives, but I was never able to relate to their situations of feelings (because they aren't humans particularly). I could imagine that the Covenant feel an equal pain and loss over the fallen comrade, but lets be honest.

The UNSC is humanity. Much easier to relate to them.

Also I can't draw an Elite for my life.

I always found it easy to relate to ((most)) Covenant, acctually.
And I always felt bad for the Spartans, too.

I don't know. I just find it hard to justify the genocide of an entire species. Even if your religion calls for it.

But I do like the Arbiter. He's awesome. And Half-Jaw too. All the Covenant I like are sided with humanity.

And the grunts are pure hilarity incarnate.
